Renowned research scientist, former director of NASA’s Life Sciences Division, and author of “Sitting Kills, Moving Heals” Dr. Joan Vernikos Ph. D. will be collaborating on a pilot program for high functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ADS) students at the Air and Space Academy in Tucson and Green Valley. She will be visiting the schools on Wednesday, September 26, and Thursday, September 27 to observe program activities, conduct teacher & parent discussions and present awards to students for progress in the pilot program “Stand for Your Health”, which used Dr. Vernikos NASA research as a base.

“We are developing a study to measure the contributions that non-invasive, regularly spaced moderate physical movement has on targeted brain functions which improve cognition and feelings of overall wellness in children with autism in grades K-8. This study will use findings from the NASA Space research program as they are applicable to human health on Earth”, stated Ms. Mary Lou Klem, Charter Founder for the Lifelong Learning Research Institute, and leader of the pilot program.

Limited openings for high functioning ASD students entering grades K-5 for the 3 year pilot, and K-3 for the 5 year program are still available.
