Tucson Teen Murdered By Boyfriend, Turns Himself In At Border

The Tucson Police Department is actively investigating the death of 18-year-old Yocelyn Ozuna Ortega, that occurred on Tucson’s Southside.

On March 8, 2018, just before 10:00 p.m., Tucson Police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of East Teton Road for a report of a possible deceased female. Upon arrival, officers entered the home and found Yocelyn with obvious signs of gunshot trauma. Yocelyn was pronounced deceased on scene.

Detectives were able to determine that Yocelyn lived at the residence with her boyfriend, 27-year-old Jose Islas-Garcia. Yocelyn and Jose had been arguing that day and there was a history of Domestic Violence in the home. Jose’s mother lives next door and saw Jose leave the residence earlier in the evening without Yocelyn. She then went next door to check on Yocelyn and found her unresponsive in one of the bedrooms.

After conducting interviews and collecting evidence from the scene, detectives were able to obtain a felony arrest warrant for Jose Islas-Garcia for one count of First Degree Murder. Detectives learned Jose had possibly fled to Mexico following the incident and worked diligently to locate him.

Early this morning, Jose turned himself in at the border and was taken into custody without incident. He was transported and booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 88-CRIME. You can remain anonymous.
