Tucson Police Officer Shoots To Stop Father, Son Fight

On April 4, 2018, shortly after 8:00 p.m., residents in the 1300 block of N. Falcon Ridge Drive (near west Speedway and Greasewood Rd) in Tucson, called 911 to report a neighbor disturbance. It was reported that unknown family members were outside arguing in front of a residence and that one of them was armed with a gun. Tucson Police officers were dispatched to the scene.

As officers arrived and approached the residence, they noticed two adult males, later identified as a father and son, struggling over a handgun. As they were giving commands to drop the weapon, the handgun was fired. One officer discharged his firearm, striking one of the subjects (the adult son). Officers immediately began rendering aid and summoned paramedics. Members from the Tucson Fire Department responded to the scene and took over medical treatment. The male was transported to a local area hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured during the shooting.

Detectives from the Tucson Police Department Violent Crimes Section and sergeants with the Office of Professional Standards responded to continue the investigation. Detectives with the Violent Crimes Section are conducting the criminal portion of the investigation. The Office of Professional Standards is conducting a separate and parallel administrative investigation to examine the actions of department personnel. This is standard protocol in all officer-involved shootings. Additionally, representatives from the department’s Critical Incident Review Board (CIRB) will evaluate the response to this incident.

The officer involved in the shooting was Officer Gustavo Castro, a three and a half year veteran of the Tucson Police Department.

The suspect is still receiving treatment at the hospital. His name and pending charges are being withheld until he is discharged.
