Cochise County Residents Warned Of Telephone Scammers

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a telephone scam in which criminals are posing as Sheriff’s deputies and supervisors to steal your money.

According to the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, the calls are received from an out of state telephone number or a spoofed number from the actual Sheriff’s Office where the caller reportedly tells the intended victim that there is a warrant for their arrest and they can to either meet the deputy at the Bisbee Sheriff’s Office or get a money order for the amount of bond. The intended victim then gets a call back asking for the number for the money order and then they are out the money.

A victim contacted the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday and reported that she knew the person who was calling by name and believed him enough to get a $2000.00 dollar money order and then provide the information to the caller.

A second intended victim was told by a scammer that her sister used her name on a loan which was fraud and the only way that the sisters’ home would not be “raided” was if the money for the fraud was paid. The callers were also using Sheriff’s employees names.

A third intended victim was called and told that there was a warrant for her arrest for failing to appear for jury duty and she advised that the caller was very rude and when she asked to speak to the supervisor, that subject was also extremely rude and she did not make any payments.
