Mexican gang member convicted of manslaughter tunnels under border fence

YUMA — A Mexican gang member who was previously convicted of voluntary manslaughter in California, was arrested by Border Patrol agents after he tunneled under the border fence east of San Luis Monday night.

He admitted to being a member of the Border Brother Street gang, said a release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Mexican national, whose name has not been released, will be prosecuted for reentry after deportation.

He was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in 1984 in Fresno, California, and was sentenced to 11 years in prison.

“Using surveillance technology, agents observed the man walking north from the border approximately 10 miles east of the Port of San Luis,” read the CBP announcement of the arrest. “Agents determined  he had burrowed under an older section of the border fence in the same area used by the group of 376 Central Americans the previous Monday.”
