A 16-year-old Boy Scout who died while he was hiking with his troop at the Picacho Peak State Park on Saturday has been identified. His name is Josh Michael White, according to a fellow student and Boy Scout.

He was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 99 and was from Goodyear.

Pinal County Sheriff’s officials say the group had water but ran out when they got to the top of the mountain and the teen began to exhibit signs of extreme dehydration on the way down.

Members of the group called for help and emergency responders attempted to resuscitate White but were unsuccessful.
Authorities say he was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s unclear if the lack of water led to the teen’s death.

The Boy Scouts of America released the follow statement in response to the boy’s death:

“This is a very difficult time for our Scouting family. We are deeply saddened by the death of one of our youth members. We offer our sincerest condolences to his family, and we will support them in any way that we can. Please join us in keeping his family and friends everywhere in your thoughts and prayers. “We are mindful of the impact this incident may have on Scouts and volunteers, and grief counselors are standing by to care for our youth members and adult leaders.”
