The victim of an accident that occurred on August 25, 2019, at approximately 7:40 p.m., on Flowing Wells Road has died from her injuries. The 11-year-old, Belen Mejia-Renteria, passed away on the afternoon of August 27, 2019.

According to Tucson Police, detectives interviewed witness who said that Belen was seen entering the crosswalk eastbound, directly in front of 3333 N. Flowing Wells Road. It was reported that Belen was walking quickly, with her head down and never looked up before entering the crosswalk. The crosswalk is equipped with a HAWK (High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk) Pedestrian Signal, however; the button was not pressed to activate the lights.

As the girl crossed the southbound curb lane of traffic and entered the southbound median lane of traffic, she was struck by a Jeep Wrangler SUV. The driver of the Jeep immediately pulled over and remained on scene, where he cooperated with the investigation. The driver advised police that he did not see the pedestrian until the last minute. A DUI officer responded and determined the driver was not impaired at the time of the collision. After conducting interviews and examining roadway evidence, detectives concluded that speed was not a factor.

Detectives are continuing their investigation. No charges or citations have been issued at this time. Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call 88-CRIME.
