PHOENIX — On Monday, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone held a press conference to address the officer involved shooting on Friday. The shooting death of 20-year-old Elijah Boatley occurred while officers were attempting to arrest him.

Boatley and 18-year-old Matthew Marquez were sought by the Sheriff’s Office in connection with shooting at Phoenix firefighters at a station in Laveen during a burglary attempt on Thursday night.

Both men were targeted during separate raids on Friday. Marquez was taken into custody at his home near 24th Street and Baseline Road without incident.

Deputies acting as part of the FBI’s Violent Gang Task Force, attempted to arrest Boatley near 48th Street and Broadway Road.

Surveillance video shows officers approach Boatley in his vehicle at a business. After officers announced their presence, Boatley exits his vehicle. Officers say Boatley brandished a weapon.
