TUCSON – The nation has begun to focus on Antifa in the aftermath of the recent riots and horrific violence in multiple U.S. cities.
That focus has prompted question on why the University of Arizona is inviting students to intern with Alliance for Global Justice, one of the funders of Antifa’s many radical groups.
Did You Know:
RefuseFascism is the Antifa arm of the Radical Communist Party (RCP)
RCP receives funding from Alliance for Global Justice
AFGJ is funded by Open Society, Ben & Jerrys, Craigslist, Tides Foundation, and the University of Arizona

U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr announced last week the arrests of 51 individuals for federal crimes related to rioting. Barr blamed the violence at protests in response to George Floyd’s death on Antifa and “other similar extremist groups.”
What is Antifa?

Barr said, “The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.” At the same time, President Trump tweeted that the feds would be designating Antifa, which is short for “anti-fascist,” as a terrorist organization.
What does the University of Arizona have to do with it?
According to Influencewatch.org, Alliance for Global Justice has received funding from the University of Arizona. A review of the organization’s recent 990s does reveal its beneficiaries, but it does not list its benefactors. IRS 990 forms are used for tax returns by organizations that are exempt from paying income taxes.
As a result, we can not confirm that the University is now funding the Alliance for Global Justice.
Regardless of its current funding policy, the University offers AFGJ something else extremely valuable: student interns who are completing degrees in the School of Government and Public Policy. Those students must complete an internship requirement for graduation:
The Public Management & Policy internship requirement can be met by interning at any of the organizations on this page. If you have found an internship NOT on our website, you must ask your internship supervisor to complete the Internship Description and return it to Susan Warren, the Internship Coordinator for approval.
According to the websites of both organizations — Influence Watch and AFGJ — RefuseFascism is a beneficiary of AFGJ.
From Influence Watch:
“… The Alliance for Global Justice, sometimes styled (AFGJ) is an organizing group that serves as a fiscal sponsor to numerous left-wing initiatives, among them Refuse Fascism, United Students Against Sweatshops, and Stop Mass Incarceration. The group arose from the Nicaragua Network, an organization which supported the Communist-aligned Sandinista regime in Nicaragua. The group describes itself as “anti-capitalist,” opposed to the principles of liberal democracy and individual rights, and favoring a “multi-polar” world order with powerful rivals to American international primacy.”
RefuseFascism is a radical left-wing organization devoted to promoting nationwide action to remove President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and all officials associated with their administration from office on the grounds that they constitute a “fascist regime.” The group has been present at many Antifa radical-left demonstrations, and co-founder Sunsara Taylor has refused to condemn violent protest as a legitimate means of communicating the organization’s message. The group is an offshoot of the Radical Communist Party (RCP).
The Arizona Daily Independent reached out to University of Arizona Vice-president Craig Henderson for an explanation of the intern “opportunity” review process, but he did not respond by our deadline.
