A 17-year-old Bisbee teen is sitting the Cochise County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail after being charged as an adult with multiple felonies related to a Sept. 17 armed robbery in Sierra Vista.

Monday’s arrest of Daniel Josh Miranda was the result of an ongoing investigation by Det. John Andela, who identified the teen as one of two suspects shortly after officers responded to a 911 report of a man robbed at gunpoint at a local apartment complex. No one was injured in the robbery, but both suspects fled before officers arrived.

Miranda was taken into custody without incident, according to Andela. The teen is being charged as an adult based on Arizona Revised Statute 13-501 which mandates that a minor of Miranda’s age must be charged in adult court if accused of various violent crimes, including armed robbery. A justice of the peace set Miranda’s bail during a Tuesday morning court appearance.

It is expected that Miranda will be appointed a public defender. Once the attorney reviews the charges, the attorney can file a motion to transfer the case to juvenile court if there is sufficient evidence to show Miranda and/or public safety will be better served having the matter heard in juvenile court.

In the meantime, Miranda’s co-defendant remains in the Cochise County jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail.

Demondra Heard was arrested Sept. 22 for his alleged role in the Sept. 17 armed robbery. He was formally indicted by a county grand jury last week and is awaiting arraignment later this month.
