Phoenix Police detectives are investigating an officer involved shooting that left the suspect hospitalized.

According to the Phoenix Police Department, on November 20, 2023, around 2:48 a.m., an officer was in the area of 24th Drive and Thomas Road when they conducted a subject stop with a man after the man crossed Thomas Road on a bike midblock and was almost hit by the police vehicle. During this subject stop the man became non-compliant with the officer’s commands. The man struggled with the officer as they attempted to detain him. During this struggle, the officer observed a handgun in the man’s waistband. The man more aggressively resisted arrest and broke free from the officer. The man ran westbound on Thomas Road towards the I-17 freeway.

As the man was running, he fired multiple gunshots, all of which are believed to have been in the direction of the officer. The man continued to run westbound crossing the I-17 and then headed into the neighborhood north of Thomas Road. With the assistance of the Phoenix Police helicopter, the man was tracked to an alleyway just south of Earll Drive and west of 25th Drive.

Multiple officers contacted the man in this alley and he again failed to comply with commands. The man moved one of his hands towards his waistband at which time one officer fired multiple rounds from his duty weapon, striking the man. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Once he is cleared medically, the man will be booked into jail on multiple charges to include aggravated assault.

The investigation continues.
