Three gunmen opened fire on a party in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora early Friday in northern Mexico. The gunmen killed 6 people and wounded 26 others.

It’s suspected the confrontation was a coordinated attack on a known cartel member who was wanted for homicide and other criminal charges.

The suspected cartel member tried to flee on foot and was killed. The attackers evaded Mexican authorities and have not been located. Sonora is less than a mile from Lukeville, Arizona’s Port of Entry and has seen an alarming rate of migrants crossing in several months.

The northern Mexico state of Sonora has seen its share of local gang and cartel violence. Nora Lira, leader of the group known as Rastreadoras, located in Ciudad Obregon, said in a live Facebook broadcast “The bodies were wrapped in blankets and (the medical examiner) took them. It was three women and five men.”

México’s northern Sonora state has become a hotbed for narco-turf battles and human trafficking. Record migration to the United States and increased profit margins line the pockets of the Cartels that control the region.

In the denouement, it shall be the populace ensnared amidst the crossfire of stray bullets, mothers lamenting, children languishing in starvation, and kin discovered in graves excavated, who bear the brunt of the severity wrought by such ruthless individuals.
