AZ Legislature Week In Review – Week Ending April 12, 2024

az capitol

Normally, this would have been a very uneventful week for the legislature. Most of the legislative activity has been negotiating the budget, which happens mostly behind the scene. Other than that, legislative activity has been limited to meeting only once a week, and putting the final touches on some pending bills, most of which may be characterized as housekeeping bills, without major political impact.

However, all that changed this week with the AZ Supreme Court’s decision to uphold ARS13-3603 as the prevailing statute regarding abortion. This century-old law criminalizes most abortion activity.

In addition to torpedoing most legislative activity, this ruling brought to the forefront two important issues.

First, it exposed to the whole world the true character of a significant number of AZ Democrat state representatives. They proved beyond any doubt that they are a mob of thugs, as may be seen in THIS VIDEO

Second, it is, or should be, a wakeup call to Republicans that they must react wisely. Otherwise, we face the strong possibility of two disastrous events happening. One is the approving by voters of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing abortion on demand, with virtually no restrictions. The other is the loss of control of the legislature to the Democrats.

Every poll that we have been able to find indicates that the vast majority of Americans do not want either extreme. They do not want near-universal prohibition, as required under ARS13-3603, or near-universal abortion on demand, as would be the case if the abortion question gets a favorable vote in November.

What most Americans want is a common-sense compromise, as in ARS 36-2322, the law that prohibits most abortions after the 15th week of gestation, but allows them up to that point.

That compromise solution has been supported by former president Trump, whose remarks have been reported HERE

Elsewhere at the capitol, Hobbs continues to exercise her role as Socialist gate-keeper by vetoing most bills that have any significant positive effect.

The veto count is now 29 of the 209 that have been sent to her.
