Like her father, the late Representative Raul Grijalva, newly-installed Representative Adelita Grijalva is being accused of grandstanding with claims that she was pepper sprayed at a mob action against ICE agents.
“ICE just conducted a raid by Taco Giro in Tucson – a small mom-and-pop restaurant that has served our community for years.
When I presented myself as a Member of Congress asking for more information, I was pushed-aside and pepper sprayed.”
Assistant Secretary Dept. of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin quickly refuted the portly politician, posting on X.com:
“If her claims were true, this would be a medical marvel.
But they’re not true. She wasn’t pepper sprayed.
She was in the vicinity of someone who *was* pepper sprayed as they were obstructing and assaulting law enforcement. In fact, 2 law enforcement officers were seriously injured by this mob that @Rep_Grijalva joined.
Presenting one’s self as a “Member of Congress” doesn’t give you the right to obstruct law enforcement.
More information forthcoming.”
Federal agents from the IRS and Homeland Security Investigations were executing search warrants at restaurants across Tucson, including the Taco Giro Mexican Grill as part of years-long investigation into immigration and tax violations.
🚨 WTF?! Dem. Rep Adelita Grijalva just posted herself OBSTRUCTING federal immigration agents in Arizona
She joined a RIOT of leftists.
She needs to be censured and stripped of all committees, now. Grijalva was only sworn into office a couple of weeks ago! https://t.co/JNApwxA88l pic.twitter.com/eCKHfm7Fzi

According to the Department of Homeland Security, new data shows “a more than 1,150% increase in assaults and violence against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) law enforcement officers as compared with the same period in 2024 under the Biden administration. From January 21, 2024, through November 21, 2024, there were only 19 reported assaults against ICE law enforcement, while in the same timeframe in 2025 there were 238 reported assaults. This is a 1,153% increase in assaults.”
Arizona State House Democrats released the following statement in response to Grijalva’s claims:
“This was a disgraceful and cowardly act by agents of a disgraceful and cowardly administration. Instead of working to bring down costs and making life more affordable, the lawless Trump administration is instead pepper spraying a member of Congress and leveling military level force against small businesses and working people. Congresswoman Grijalva was completely within her rights and duties to be present, to ask questions and to stand up for her community. Taxpayer-funded ICE employees responded with violence and aggression. This is unwarranted, un-American and unacceptable, and these agents and their superiors should be held accountable for their actions.”
In September, a formal ethics complaint was filed against Arizona State Senator Analise Ortiz accusing her of repeatedly attempting to undermine federal immigration enforcement operations in Arizona.
“Senator Ortiz’s actions were not only reckless – they were dangerous,” said Senator Jake
Hoffman after filing the complaint. “By publicly posting alerts about federal law enforcement activity, she actively tipped off individuals being pursued by ICE, jeopardizing the safety of officers and law-abiding citizens.”
The complaint details how Senator Ortiz used her official platform to broadcast real-time alerts about ICE activity, urging people to evade lawful enforcement operations.
Senate Republicans are calling for Senator Ortiz to face expulsion or, at a minimum, significant disciplinary action.
