The TUSD Governing Board voted unanimously to put forth the name of Mr. Juan Ciscomani as the fifth member of Dr. Arzoumanian’s Advisory Committee. Dr. Arzoumanian, Pima County School Superintendent had advised the Board that if they failed again to select a fifth person to the Committee by November 30, she would be forced to hold a special election to fill the vacancy on the board left by the passing of Judy Burns.
In the Board’s second attempt to fill the fifth spot, Adelita Grijalva fought hard for her controversial nominee, a TUSD Ethnic Studies director, Roxanne Begay, and against Dr. Stegeman’s well regarded nominee Juan Ciscomani. Grijalva recognizing her own inability to reason, proposed throwing a reasoned discussion out the window altogether, and asked for a lottery or drawing of names. When that request did not receive support, she attempted to tell Mr. Cuevas, the Board president, that he alone should decide which of the four nominees should serve on the committee.
Cuevas quickly rejected that suggestion. He explained that he had the most to lose in terms of a political future and therefore he would reject being solely responsible for the selection of the fifth member. Common sense and self-preservation forced Mr. Cuevas to tell his fellow Board members that the issue needed to be resolved and a special election needed to avoided at all cost.
Telling the audience and his fellow Board members that the “issue needs to be put to rest.” Miguel Cuevas put forward the name of Juan Ciscomani as the fifth person a part of the interview committee. Dr. Stegeman seconded the motion. Mr. Juan Ciscomani was unanymousky voted the the fifth person to Dr. Arzoumanian’s Community Advisory Committee.
The four other members of the Community Advisory Committee include Charles Weisel, Michele Harbour, Steve Holmes, and Tola Barker. Colleen Niccum was named an alternate.
