The saying goes that there are only two things in life that are certain: death and taxes. In southern Arizona there is a third: one way or another – come Wednesday morning – the people of southern Arizona will not see Martha McSally again for a long time.
If she wins, she will leave as fast as she did last time she lost. If you recall, she left for D.C. before the vote was finally tallied. She signed herself up for freshman orientation on the Hill. She looked foolish, as she slunk back to the desert, but the spin masters at the GOP got a free pass as an uninterested media passed on a golden opportunity for snark.
If McSally loses, no problem. She never unpacked when she dropped out of the sky like a vulture to devour the remains of retiring Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. McSally will disappear as fast as she appeared and it will be a good thing for southern Arizona.
Whatever Tuesday brings to Martha McSally, it will bring the people of southern Arizona a merciful reprieve or an end.
Whatever happens, we want to go on record now: farewell, despedida, adios, goodbye, ciao, au revoir, good riddance, arrivederci, la revedere, tot ziens, don’t let the screen door hit you on your way out.
