House Votes To End Ballot Harvesting

After compelling testimony from community leaders in southern Arizona about the abuses of ballot harvesting, the Arizona House of representatives voted to end the practice. For what seemed like an eternity on Thursday, Democrat lawmakers explained why their constituents needed the most basic assistance to cast their ballots, before the bill went to a vote.

Eventually, the House did vote 34-23 to end the practice. The vote fell along party lines with only Republican Rep. Heather Carter voting against the measure.

Last week, Arizona legislators heard testimony from community leaders Sergio Arellano and Shuron Harvey about the abuses of political operatives during the ballot harvesting process.

HB2023 will make ballot harvesting a class six felony.

Sergio Arellano, a southern Arizona native and community leader, stunned lawmakers last week when he spoke truth to power

Abuse of the process was vehemently denied by operatives until Republican Party activist, A. J. LaFaro first exposed it in 2014.
