Tucson Police Investigating officer involved midtown shooting

The Tucson Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m. on March 17, 2019, near N. Rosemont Blvd. and E. Speedway Blvd.

According to Tucson Police, a patrol officer “had conducted a traffic stop on a passenger vehicle in the 5100 block of E. First Street. As both the vehicle and the officer’s patrol vehicle came to a stop, the officer was immediately fired upon by the driver. The officer and suspect exchanged gunfire in which the suspect was struck multiple times. A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle took control of the vehicle and fled the scene.”

Officer Alvaro Silva, a 3 ½-year veteran of the department, was not injured.

The suspect was then transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
