TUSD Community Transition Program students surprised with admission to U of A

Many opponents of school choice don’t realize that public schools offer many excellent choices for many students. For ten TUSD students, their choice led to an remarkable opportunity.

An opportunity that would only be a dream for students like them elsewhere, but for the students of the Community Transition Program; a program designed for students with intellectual disabilities, it became a reality on Wednesday.

The students were surprised with the news that they had gained admission to the U of A and according to Stefanie Boe, TUSD Director of Communications, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Parents cried and hugged as the news sunk in; their children were going to college.

According to Boe, the students will be dual enrolled in TUSD and the U of A and will be in the two-year Project FOCUS program. To graduate with a Certificate in Service Learning, they must complete at least 25 credits.
