Maricopa County Settles DOJ Arpaio Case

A unanimous vote by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors today agreed to settle three portions of an ongoing lawsuit involving the U.S. Department of Justice and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

The board members said the action would help “turn the page” by resolving claims of retaliation against public officials, Spanish language interpreters in the jails, and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office workplace raids for immigration enforcement.

“Maricopa County has always intended to settle this case,” Board Chairman Steve Chucri said after the vote. “We are pleased we can settle these three items and move forward. We will continue to work with the Justice Department and the Sheriff’s Office to clear up any ongoing concerns about traffic stops and hopefully settle that portion of the lawsuit in the near future.”

A trial on the case is scheduled for August 10 in U.S. District Court.
