Steel Wool Keeps Mice Out of the Garage

Earlier this year my garage became a haven for many mice, although I saw only one at a time. At first I tried mothballs because I read somewhere that the smell is repellant to rodents. It didn’t work. But the garage smelled good.

I was kind at first and caught the mice in live traps and transported them far away. But they kept coming. After capturing (and killing) nine mice in three weeks, I had to find a way to keep them from getting in. I determined that they were squeezing in between the garage door and the wall.

My wife had the idea of putting steel wool between the door and the wall. All it took was a steel wool pad about five inches high. As you can see from the photo, when the door comes down in its track, it squeezes the steel wool against the wall. That works. There have been no mice since the day I installed the steel wool We have been mouse-free for the past five months. No more lizards either. This may work on other potential rodent entrances.
