Phoenix Council Rejects Petition Calling For The Firing Of Officers Seen In Viral Video

On Wednesday, the Phoenix City Council rejected a petition that called for the firing of Phoenix Police officers seen in a selected video cursing and pointing guns at a couple, who had initially fled from police after allegedly shoplifting.

The petition was filed by the controversial Rev. Jarrett Maupin. Maupin, described in the Arizona Republic as an advocate whose “clients” generally are those entangled in tragic or questionable situations,” filed the petition two weeks ago.

Around that same time a Notice of Claim was filed on behalf of the couple demanding $10 million.

Maupin’s petition demanded that the Phoenix City Council direct City Manager Ed Zuercher to fire the officers seen in the video and discipline their supervisors.

Because the City of Phoenix charter requires that the Council consider any petition submitted by residents within 15 days, the Council had no choice but to consider it at Wednesday’s meeting.

Since the video was released, Phoenix Police officers and other staff have been threatened. Radical Antifah-associated groups have doxed Phoenix Police staff, Zuercher, and DiCiccio.
