If there’s one central theme that runs through both…the elephantine University of Arizona’s present money & management predicament, and its encampment-like, 1 million + hometown urban dystopia…it has to be leadership.
Both enterprises, urban & academic, absolutely hate the idea of change, or the [blindingly obvious] necessity of a ‘change agent.’
It’s akin to that famous one-liner from the classic scene in the 1948 John Huston movie, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
Those of you who live in the real world, outside the Woke bubble of Metro Tucson ….you have no experience for the weekly suffering—what the normal, sane, unabsorbed, hard-working (& retired) folk of the ‘Old Pueblo’ have to endure.
It’s like we’re on a completely different planet from these kooky people; and I travel around the West enough to validate this [yes, fully subjective] assessment. Tucson IS the “Portland of the Southwest”.
One run here by a political conspiracy that must increasingly feed ($$$) upon the wealth of all Arizona!
For nearly five years now I have detailed their agenda:

- They have successfully taken over, corrupted, and wrecked our flagship university (a $2+ billion/yr. enterprise)
- They have denied our economy precious water resources, mandating shortages and even more control bureaucracy
- They are destroying a key state, unique wealth-creation advantage, the mining industry
- They have foisted upon state government incredibly mendacious & incompetent senior leaders
- They are now successfully turning our state into New Mexico(not California as many fear)
- They (Smallhouse & Budinger $$$) now aim to totally rearrange the voting process itselfto “institutionalize” their control scheme
With this present [entirely predictable] outcome at the University of Arizona, the AZ Legislature has a golden opportunity to “strike at the root”, as Thoreau once advised. I detailed how to simply do that in this op-ed of April last year.
